Expert perspective: More can be done to improve Minnesota’s health ranking

The United Health Foundation recently released the 2014 edition of America’s Health Rankings and Minnesota ranks sixth overall. That’s good news, right? Well, if you consider Minnesota was the top ranked state six out of seven years from 2000-2006 and that Minnesota was ranked third in 2012 and 2013, the latest figures could be rather disappointing.

University of Minnesota Physicians specialists join the state of Minnesota atop national health care rankings

The University of Minnesota and its home state have both been receiving acclaim as of late for superior health care delivered by some of the best clinical providers in the country.

Here’s a look at some of the latest rankings:

Last week, U.S. News & World Report released its annual “Best Hospitals” report and ranked the University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview (UMMC) and Amplatz Children’s Hospital nationally in 11 adult and six pediatric specialties, respectively.  Hundreds of University of Minnesota Physicians clinical specialists provide care at UMMC and Amplatz every day.

The latest rankings position UMMC second among nearly 150 hospitals in the state of Minnesota and first within the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area.

“We are gratified to learn that the work we do as an academic physician practice and in partnership with the University of Minnesota Medical Center and Amplatz Children’s Hospital continues to be recognized for quality and excellence,” said Aaron Friedman, M.D., vice president of health sciences and dean of the University of Minnesota Medical School. “The latest rankings are a tribute to the efforts of the entire practice team and reflects our values of excellent, high quality care, new science and innovation and service to our community.”
